How much for 16 mm?

how much would a 16 mm camera go for?

I recently bought a 2nd hand bolex for 150 quid.
Perfect for learning the ropes.
Dont pay much more than that for one of these.
Another thing to decide is if you want super16 or standard 16. Personally I dont see much point in getting a standard 16 camera (double perforations).
(except perhaps for animation)

All figures are in U.S. dollars...

First off, the most expensive part of the camera is the lens, (think between $1000 to $25000) so take into consideration that all of the following camera prices are WITH lenses and most of the stuff you need to get started... ie. Mags, handles, etc. etc.

NOW!

For a used, Arriflex 16mm ST (NOT A SYNC SOUND CAMERA, and very noisy) you'll probally find one for around $2000.

NEXT

For a used, Arriflex 16mm BL (SYNC CAMERA, with a blimp lens for recording sound.) you'll find one for about $3500. Maybe a bit less if you are lucky.

I've used both of the above cameras. They're excellent, of course the Arri BL is much better than the ST.

NOW... if you looking to buy new! The problem with this is that most new cameras use computers/ or have some sort of digital apparutus incorporated into them. This makes these cameras somewhat PRICEY!

A brand new Arriflex SR 2 goes for around $25000.

The newest arriflex, the Arii SR 3 starts at about $40000.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you looking for a good camera for a decent price,here's a VERY brief and basic discription of a few that I like.

Krasnogorsk-3( aka K-3): are extremly cheap, have a mirror -reflex shutter( so you can line your shot right through the lens) and can use quite a few diffrent lenses. Only problem with them is that their spring-wound and a little prone of scratching film so you might wan't to get it calibrated. Although they can be crystal-synced, the price of doing so dosn't justify the cost most of the time nore can they be blimped very well. Also they only hold 100' reels( roughtly 2.5 minutes of film)Cost: $150 and up

Scoopics: an excellent little cameras, battery operated. The lens ( 12.5 to 75mm)even though is permintely fixed to the camera is considerd one of the best ever made and can be crystal synced for a price. Normaly they hold 100' reels but there is an adapter for the MS models that hold up to 400 feet.Cost: $350 and up

Kinor 16 SX 2: hard to find Russian camera that gives a lot for it's price. has a changeable lens mount, crystal synced at 25 FPS and usuall has about five prime lens with it. They can take either 100 or 400' foot mags.Cost:$650 and up

ECLAIR: Sort of the XL1 of it's day. holds 200 to 400' foot mags, crystal synced, wide range of lenses can be used with them. There's the older NLC and newer ACL models ( the French ones are consided the best) Cost: $1.500 and up.

CP-16R: even though it's ugly as hell it's considerd one of the quitest crystal-synced cameras ever made. cost: $1,000 and up.
